About This Unit

In this unit, we will study how the particles that make up matter interact with each other. You already know that matter can exist as solids, liquids, and gases, but in this unit we will look more closely at why substances behave differently in each state.

We will focus on intermolecular forces, or IMFs, which are attractions between particles. These forces help explain many physical properties, including boiling point, melting point, vapor pressure, solubility, and phase changes. You will learn how the structure and polarity of a molecule affect the types of IMFs it can form, and how those forces influence what we can observe in the lab or in real life.

AP exam questions often ask you to compare substances and explain differences in their properties using particle-level reasoning. A strong answer should name the specific intermolecular force involved and explain how it affects the property being compared. You will practice avoiding vague explanations like “it has stronger forces” unless you clearly explain which force is stronger and why.
