About This Unit
In this unit, we will study thermochemistry, which focuses on energy changes during physical and chemical processes. This builds on earlier units by helping us explain why matter changes temperature, changes state, or reacts with other substances.
We will learn how energy is transferred as heat and how that energy affects particles. For example, we will explain why water releases energy when it freezes, why evaporation makes your skin feel cold, and how energy is involved when substances melt, boil, or react.
A major focus of this unit is tracking energy changes even though energy cannot be seen directly. You will use temperature changes, calorimetry data, equations, and diagrams to measure and represent energy transfer. You will also learn how to connect energy changes to chemical bonds.
One of the most important ideas in this unit is that breaking bonds requires energy, while forming bonds releases energy. This helps explain why some reactions, such as combustion reactions that form carbon dioxide and water, release energy overall.
On the AP Chemistry Exam students are expected to calculate heat transfer, analyze calorimetry data, and estimate reaction enthalpy using bonds broken and bonds formed. Strong answers should clearly identify where energy is absorbed, where energy is released, and how the overall energy change is determined.
